SISTER MAXINE: We’re here on a Motherhouse Road Trip with the Carmelite nuns of Baltimore, Maryland. Sister Colette, can you describe what your Carmelite life of prayer looks like on a day-to-day basis?
SISTER COLETTE: Our prayer life is pretty simple in terms of the schedule. We do pray the Liturgy of the Hours. We have morning prayer, we have vespers in the evening and we have the Office of Readings or vigil. The novices have midday prayer together, and the rest of the community prays that privately. We always have Eucharist or a communion service, but most days we have Eucharist and occasionally a communion service, and these are the liturgical parts of our prayer. We also have two hours of personal prayer. We have an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening for each sister, and I think this is when we can really take to heart, also, some of the deep concerns that we have, and somehow try and put on the currents of the world, our love and our care and our concern.
